The Shared Foundations of John Bowlby and Gregory Bateson
What connects John Bowlby’s attachment theory with Gregory Bateson’s systems thinking? This article explores how systems theory, cybernetics, feedback and relational processes contributed to two influential ways of understanding human behaviour, relationships and psychological development.
Bowlby and Bateson are two of my intellectual heroes. I’ve always admired the width of their world views and their remarkable capacity to integrate different domains of knowledge. Both being well known, they are usually associated with different intellectual traditions. Bowlby is best known as the principal architect of attachment theory, while Bateson made influential contributions to anthropology, communication theory, psychiatry, ecology, and cybernetics.
Yet they both moved away from explanations that viewed human behavior as the isolated product of internal drives or individual traits and toward models that emphasized relationships, feedback, adaptation, and patterns of interaction. They both found in General Systems Theory and cybernetics the intellectual tools for making this shift possible. While Bowlby applied these ideas primarily to the attachment relationship between a child and caregiver, Bateson extended these principles in the domains of communication, families, culture, and ecological systems. Although they used general systems thinking quite differently, both understood behavior as part of an organized, dynamic system in which individual and environment continuously influence each other.
General Systems Theory and Cybernetics
The general systems perspective emerged partly as a response to the limitations of reductionism. The prevailing scientific approach at the time often attempted to understand a phenomenon by separating it into increasingly small components. General Systems Theory emphasized instead the relationships among components and the properties that emerged from their organization. Ludwig von Bertalanffy argued that principles of organization could be studied across different scientific domains, such as biology, psychology, and social sciences. His General Systems Theory (1968) explicitly developed systems concepts applicable both to biological and social phenomena.
On the other hand, Cybernetics contributed in a related but distinctive way on regulation, communication, information, and feedback. Rather than viewing behavior as a simple linear chain of cause and effect, cybernetic approaches examine circular processes. An action changes the environment, the resulting change provides information to the system, and the system subsequently modifies its behavior. Feedback can stabilize a system, as in homeostasis, or amplify change. This perspective made it possible to understand adaptation as an ongoing process rather than as a single response to an external stimulus. These ideas were especially important for both behavioral and social sciences because relationships themselves could be treated as systems. The central question became not simply, "What caused this person's behavior?" but also, "What pattern of interaction maintains this behavior, and how does each participant's behavior influence the others?" This shift is fundamental to understanding both Bowlby's mature attachment theory and Bateson's theory of communication.
Bowlby's Attachment Theory as a Control System
Bowlby's early work developed partly from psychoanalysis, but he increasingly found that traditional psychoanalytic explanations did not adequately account for children's observable attachment behavior. He incorporated insights from ethology, evolutionary theory, and control systems theory. By the time Attachment and Loss was published, Bowlby had developed a model in which attachment behavior functioned as part of an organized behavioral system whose purpose was to maintain an appropriate relationship with an attachment figure.
In Bowlby’s model, the concept of a control system was particularly important. A control system does not merely produce predetermined behavior; it compares a current condition with a desired condition and modifies behavior in real time in response to discrepancies between the two. Bowlby applied this logic to attachment.
An infant has a set-goal involving proximity or accessibility to an attachment figure. When the caregiver is sufficiently available, the attachment system can remain relatively inactive, allowing the child to explore the environment. When the child perceives danger, separation, or unavailability, attachment behaviors such as crying, following, approaching, or clinging become activated. The child's behavior then changes the relationship with the caregiver, and information about the caregiver's response feeds back into the child's subsequent behavior. This model is fundamentally systemic: the infant cannot be understood independently of the caregiver and the surrounding environment. The meaning of a child's crying, for example, depends partly on how the caregiver responds. A caregiver who consistently responds sensitively may help establish expectations that distress will be followed by protection and reunion. Conversely, inconsistent or frightening responses by the caregiver can contribute to patterns in which the child's attempts to regulate proximity become more difficult. We can also find systemic influence in Bowlby’s conception of internal working models. The expectations that the child gradually develop concerning the availability of the attachment figures, the self’s ability to obtain care, and the likely outcome of proximity seeking are not static beliefs (cognitive ideas) but rather rules that guide perception and behavior within future interactions. Thus, experience becomes incorporated into a regulatory system that affects how new information is interpreted and how subsequent behavior is organized.
Bateson and the Ecology of Mind
Bateson's systems thinking was broader and more explicitly cybernetic than Bowlby's. His intellectual development brought together anthropology, biology, communication, psychiatry, and epistemology. His Steps to an Ecology of Mind (1972) collects essays from all these fields and presents a sustained attempt to identify patterns of organization common to different kinds of systems. For Bateson, the unit of analysis was less the individual organism and more the relationship or circuit connecting organisms and environments. He was particularly interested in communication as a circular process. Just as a message does not have meaning independently of the responses it produces and the context in which it occurs, individual subjects cannot be understood isolated from relationships within a particular context.
This approach became especially influential in Bateson's work on families and schizophrenia. His concept of the "double bind" described situations in which an individual receives contradictory messages at different logical levels while being unable to escape the relationship or comment effectively on the contradiction. The important point is not simply that one person sends a confusing message. Rather, the pathological pattern emerges from a recurring relationship in which the responses of each participant help maintain the larger communicational structure. Bateson's cybernetic orientation therefore encouraged clinicians to examine patterns of interaction rather than locate pathology exclusively inside an individual. Bateson's later work extended this approach into what he called an "ecology of mind." His concern was with patterns that connect organisms, relationships, societies, and environments.
I find Bowlby’s and Bateson’s strongest similarity in their overcoming a simple linear view of causality. They each recognized behavior develops within feedback loops, being within the attachment-caring system, or in a broader level of human communication. Once a person’s behavior becomes part of the environment to which another person responds, and that response subsequently alters the first person’s behavior, the cyclical nature of relationships becomes evident. Views of self-regulation and interactive regulation were also anticipated by both Bowlby and Bateson. General systems theory emphasized how living systems maintain organization while remaining open to their environments. Cybernetics added the concept of feedback through which systems regulate themselves. Lastly, both authors pointed out how context does not merely surround behavior: it actively participates in producing meaning and function. For Bowlby, attachment behavior cannot be understood apart from the child's developmental history and relationship with attachment figures. For Bateson, a communicational act cannot be understood apart from the relational and cultural context in which it occurs.
Despite these shared foundations, Bowlby and Bateson use Systems Theory in quite different ways. Bowlby's primary concern was developmental and evolutionary. He sought to explain why attachment behavior exists, how it functions adaptively, and how early attachment relationships influence personality and later relationships. In his model a relatively clear distinction between the individual organism and the environmental attachment figure was retained. Bateson, by contrast, increasingly challenged this very distinction. His systems thinking focused on larger circuits of communication and ecological organization. He was also less interested in identifying a particular internal mechanism responsible for behavior than in understanding the pattern of relationships within which behavior acquires meaning. His cybernetics therefore became increasingly epistemological: he asked not only how systems regulate themselves, but also how observers themselves become participants in the systems they attempt to understand.
Bowlby’s and Bateson’s movement away from isolated, linear explanations of human behavior and toward relational, circular, and systemic models had a great impact on the way we understand relationships, development and psychotherapy. Their work continues to influence contemporary understandings of relationships, development and psychotherapy, reinforcing the view that psychological life cannot be fully understood by examining individuals in isolation. Instead, behavior and meaning emerge through ongoing exchanges between individuals, relationships, and environments. This systemic orientation remains one of the most significant connections between attachment theory, communication theory, and modern approaches to human development.
