About Dr Mario Marrone

Dr Mario Marrone is a psychiatrist, psychoanalytic psychotherapist, author and founding member of the International Attachment Network (IAN).

Originally trained as a medical doctor in Argentina, Mario went on to train in group analysis and psychoanalysis in London. He worked for many years as a hospital psychiatrist and psychotherapist within the NHS before developing an international career in psychotherapy, teaching and attachment theory.

Mario studied attachment theory and its clinical applications with John Bowlby at the Tavistock Clinic in London. His subsequent work has contributed to the development and dissemination of attachment theory and its clinical applications internationally.

He has published extensively on attachment theory, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, parenting and related areas, with books and publications in English, Spanish and Italian.

Mario is a founder member of IAN and was closely involved in the development of the journal Attachment & Human Development. He has lectured internationally on attachment theory, psychotherapy and mental health.

John Bowlby, Attachment Theory & Mario Marrone

An important influence on Dr Mario Marrone’s professional development was his work with John Bowlby, the founder of attachment theory, at the Tavistock Clinic in London.

Mario received regular clinical supervision from Bowlby over a period of ten years, from 1980 until shortly before Bowlby’s death in 1990. This sustained professional relationship gave Mario the opportunity to study attachment theory and its clinical applications directly with Bowlby.

Mario subsequently became an important advocate for the development and clinical application of attachment theory, particularly in relation to psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and relational understanding.

Through his books, teaching and international work, he has contributed to extending Bowlby’s ideas within contemporary clinical practice and to the wider international development of attachment-informed thinking.

Dr Mario Marrone and IAN

His longstanding involvement reflects IAN’s origins in bringing together clinicians, researchers and others interested in the continuing development of the ideas first established by John Bowlby and subsequent attachment researchers.

Mario was also closely involved in the development of Attachment & Human Development, an international peer-reviewed journal dedicated to research and scholarship in attachment theory and its applications.

Through his writing, teaching and contribution to IAN, Mario has helped promote dialogue between attachment theory, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and contemporary clinical practice.
