These Terms and Conditions apply to participation in the IAN Connection Café and IAN Nurturing Connections Café, including in-person gatherings, online sessions, recordings and associated community activities.

By booking or participating in an IAN Community Café, you agree to these Terms and Conditions.

1. About the IAN Community Cafés

1.1 The International Attachment Network (IAN) provides educational and community activities that encourage greater understanding of attachment, relationships and human connection.

1.2 The IAN Community Cafés provide welcoming spaces for people to explore ideas about attachment through talks, conversations, facilitated discussion and connection with others.

1.3 The cafés are intended for education, reflection and community connection.

1.4 The cafés do not provide psychotherapy, counselling, psychological treatment, medical care or other healthcare services and should not be regarded as a substitute for appropriate professional support.

1.5 Although therapeutic ideas and personal experiences may sometimes form part of a discussion, facilitators and speakers are not acting as participants' therapists and participation does not create a therapeutic relationship.

2. Who Can Attend

2.1 IAN Community Cafés are for adults aged 18 and over unless IAN expressly states otherwise for a particular event.

2.2 No previous knowledge of attachment theory is required.

2.3 Participants may include members of the public, parents and carers, people who have encountered attachment through their own therapeutic journey, students, educators, practitioners and professionals.

2.4 IAN aims to create an inclusive and respectful environment in which different experiences, identities, families, relationships and perspectives can be explored thoughtfully.

2.5 IAN reserves the right to refuse or end participation where reasonably necessary to protect the safety, wellbeing or appropriate functioning of the group.

3. Participation and Personal Responsibility

3.1 Participation in discussion is voluntary. Participants are not required to disclose personal experiences or information.

3.2 Participants are encouraged to consider their own boundaries and wellbeing when deciding what they wish to share.

3.3 Conversations about attachment, relationships, childhood and family experiences can sometimes bring up strong feelings or memories. Participants may take a break or leave a session at any time.

3.4 Participants remain responsible for deciding whether participation is appropriate for them.

3.5 Where therapeutic, medical, safeguarding or other professional support is required, participants should seek assistance from an appropriately qualified professional or service.

4. Confidentiality

4.1 The cafés depend upon mutual trust and respect. Participants agree to respect the privacy and confidentiality of others.

4.2 Personal experiences or information shared by another participant must not be shared outside the café in a way that could identify that participant or another individual.

4.3 Participants should avoid sharing information that could identify third parties, including partners, family members, children, pupils, clients, patients or colleagues.

4.4 Therapists, teachers, healthcare professionals and other practitioners must not disclose identifiable information concerning clients, pupils, patients or others with whom they work.

4.5 Participants must not make their own audio or video recordings, photographs, screenshots or other recordings of café discussions or breakout rooms.

4.6 While IAN asks all participants to respect these confidentiality requirements, IAN cannot guarantee that another participant will comply. Participants should therefore think carefully about the personal information they choose to disclose.

4.7 Confidentiality may be limited where disclosure is required by law or where IAN reasonably believes action is necessary in response to a safeguarding concern or serious risk of harm.

5. Safeguarding

5.1 IAN is committed to creating an environment in which concerns about the safety and welfare of children and adults at risk are taken seriously.

5.2 Participants should avoid sharing identifying details about children, young people or other individuals when discussing experiences within a café.

5.3 If information is disclosed that raises a safeguarding concern, IAN may need to take appropriate action in accordance with its safeguarding responsibilities and applicable law.

5.4 This may include sharing relevant information with an appropriate person within IAN or, where necessary, with safeguarding, healthcare, emergency or statutory services.

5.5 Confidentiality cannot therefore be guaranteed where there is a safeguarding concern, a serious risk of harm or a legal requirement to disclose information.

5.6 An IAN Community Café is not an appropriate forum for dealing with an immediate safeguarding concern. Where someone is in immediate danger, participants should contact the appropriate emergency or safeguarding service.

6. In-Person Community Cafés

6.1 The standard price for attending an in-person IAN Community Café is £55 per person, unless a different price is displayed for a particular event.

6.2 The in-person ticket includes attendance at the live café and any refreshments, recording or subsequent online follow-up specified on the relevant event page.

6.3 Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel and accommodation.

6.4 Participants are expected to respect the venue, other attendees, speakers and IAN staff or volunteers.

6.5 IAN may establish reasonable capacity limits for in-person events and may close bookings when an event reaches capacity.

7. Online Community Cafés

7.1 The standard price for the online IAN Community Café experience is £20 per person, unless a different price is displayed for a particular event.

7.2 Online participation may include access to a recording of the relevant café followed by a facilitated online conversation and breakout-room discussions.

7.3 Online access is personal to the registered participant. Event links, recordings and access details must not be shared with anyone who has not registered or otherwise been granted access by IAN.

7.4 Participants are responsible for having an appropriate device, internet connection and environment from which to participate.

7.5 Participants should, where reasonably possible, join online discussions from a private environment where conversations cannot be overheard by others.

8. Online Breakout Rooms

8.1 Online café sessions may include facilitated breakout rooms to enable conversation in smaller groups.

8.2 Breakout rooms remain subject to all of these Terms, including the requirements concerning confidentiality, respectful conduct and personal boundaries.

8.3 Breakout-room conversations will not be recorded by IAN.

8.4 Participants must not record, photograph, screenshot or otherwise capture breakout-room discussions.

8.5 Participants are not required to speak or share personal information within breakout rooms and may leave a breakout room if they feel uncomfortable.

8.6 Breakout rooms are spaces for conversation and reflection. They are not therapy groups or a substitute for professional therapeutic support.

9. Recording

9.1 IAN may record designated parts of an in-person or online Community Café so that the content can subsequently be made available to registered participants, IAN members or other audiences identified in advance.

9.2 Participants will be informed where recording is taking place.

9.3 Recording will normally be limited to the speaker, host, interview, presentation or other designated part of the café.

9.4 Community discussions and breakout rooms will not normally be recorded.

9.5 Where an audience question or contribution may be captured in a recording, participants will be informed and given an opportunity not to participate in the recorded element.

9.6 Participants who do not wish their image or voice to appear in a recording should follow the privacy arrangements communicated for the particular event.

9.7 IAN recordings are provided for personal viewing only unless otherwise stated.

9.8 Participants must not copy, reproduce, download, distribute, publish, sell, screen publicly or share recordings without IAN's prior permission.

9.9 Further information about how personal information contained within recordings is processed is available in IAN's Privacy Policy.

10. Community Code of Conduct

Participants agree to:

  • treat other participants, speakers, facilitators, staff and volunteers respectfully;

  • listen to and make space for different experiences and perspectives;

  • respect other people's personal boundaries and privacy;

  • avoid discriminatory, threatening, harassing, intimidating or abusive behaviour;

  • avoid repeatedly dominating or disrupting conversations;

  • refrain from unsolicited advertising, promotion or recruitment;

  • not use the café primarily to solicit clients, patients, customers or business;

  • maintain appropriate boundaries when contacting other participants; and

  • follow reasonable instructions given by an IAN facilitator or event organiser.

10.1 IAN may intervene where behaviour is inconsistent with these expectations.

10.2 Depending on the circumstances, IAN may give a warning, restrict participation, remove a participant from a session or exclude someone from future Community Café activities.

10.3 Serious breaches of confidentiality, safeguarding requirements or standards of conduct may result in immediate removal.

10.4 Where a participant is removed because of their conduct, any entitlement to a refund will be subject to applicable law.

11. Booking and Payment

11.1 The applicable fee will be clearly displayed on the relevant event or booking page before payment is made.

11.2 Standard Community Café prices are:

In-person IAN Community Café: £55 per person

Online IAN Community Café: £20 per person

11.3 Different prices may apply to IAN members, concessions, special events or particular programmes. Where this applies, the price displayed at the point of booking will be the applicable price.

11.4 Payment is required in full at the time of booking unless otherwise stated.

11.5 Bookings are personal to the registered participant and should not be transferred to another person without IAN's prior agreement.

11.6 Where a booking includes access to recordings, online discussions or other digital resources, information about that access will be provided on the event page or following registration.

12. Cancellations and Refunds

12.1 Participants wishing to cancel a booking should notify IAN as soon as possible.

12.2 Any cancellation and refund arrangements stated on the relevant event or booking page will apply, subject always to participants' statutory consumer rights.

12.3 Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any cancellation, refund or other rights that a participant may have under applicable UK consumer law.

12.4 If IAN cancels an event for which a participant has paid a separate event fee, IAN will offer an appropriate refund or, where agreed with the participant, transfer the booking to another event.

12.5 Except where required by law, IAN is not responsible for travel, accommodation or other expenses incurred in connection with attending an event.

13. Event Changes

13.1 IAN may reasonably change an event's speaker, facilitator, content, venue, format, date or timing where necessary.

13.2 Where a significant change is made, IAN will endeavour to notify registered participants as soon as reasonably practicable.

13.3 Where circumstances outside IAN's reasonable control prevent an event from taking place as planned, IAN may reschedule, relocate or change the format of the event.

14. Intellectual Property

14.1 Talks, presentations, recordings, written materials and other resources provided through the cafés remain the intellectual property of IAN, the relevant speaker, author or other rights holder.

14.2 Materials are provided for participants' personal use unless otherwise stated.

14.3 Participants must not reproduce, publish, distribute, sell, modify or publicly share café recordings or materials without the prior permission of the relevant rights holder.

15. Data Protection

15.1 IAN processes personal information in accordance with applicable UK data protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.

15.2 Personal information may be processed for purposes including administering bookings, communicating with participants, delivering online and in-person events and, where applicable, producing and providing access to recordings.

15.3 IAN may use third-party services for functions including booking, payment processing, email communications and online event hosting. The privacy terms of those providers may also apply.

15.4 Further information about how IAN collects, uses and protects personal information is provided in the IAN Privacy Policy.

16. Limitation of Liability

16.1 Café discussions, presentations and resources are provided for general educational, reflective and community purposes.

16.2 Information provided through an IAN Community Café should not be relied upon as individual therapeutic, medical, legal, educational or other professional advice.

16.3 Participants remain responsible for decisions and actions they take following participation in a café.

16.4 To the fullest extent permitted by law, IAN will not be liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from participation in its Community Cafés.

16.5 Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

17. Third-Party Services

17.1 IAN may use third-party providers for payment processing, bookings, communications, video conferencing and other event-related services.

17.2 Participants may also be subject to the applicable terms and privacy policies of those providers.

18. The IAN Connection Café

18.1 The IAN Connection Café is a community space for adults interested in exploring attachment, relationships, connection and what it means to be human.

18.2 Participants may come to the café through personal experience, study, professional interest, relationships, their own therapeutic journey or simply curiosity about attachment.

18.3 For some participants, the café may provide an opportunity to continue thinking about ideas or questions that became meaningful through previous therapeutic work.

18.4 The Connection Café is not a continuation of therapy, a therapy group or a therapeutic relationship.

18.5 Participants may reflect on their personal experiences but are never required to disclose personal or therapeutic material.

18.6 Facilitators may sensitively redirect a conversation where personal disclosure becomes more appropriate for an individual therapeutic setting or where doing so is necessary to maintain appropriate boundaries within the group.

19. The IAN Nurturing Connections Café

19.1 The IAN Nurturing Connections Café is intended for parents, grandparents, family members, foster and kinship carers, teachers and others involved in caring for or supporting children and young people.

19.2 The café provides an opportunity to explore attachment-informed ideas about children's relationships, development, behaviour and emotional worlds, and the experiences of the adults who care for them.

19.3 The café provides education, reflection and community conversation. It does not provide individual parenting, educational, therapeutic, medical, diagnostic or safeguarding advice.

19.4 Participants remain responsible for decisions concerning children in their care or professional role and should seek appropriately qualified advice where an individual child's circumstances require it.

20. Protecting Children and Young People's Privacy

20.1 Participants in the Nurturing Connections Café must take particular care when discussing children and young people.

20.2 Participants should not share names, addresses, schools, photographs or other information that could reasonably identify an individual child.

20.3 Teachers, therapists, healthcare professionals and other practitioners must comply with their own professional, organisational, confidentiality and safeguarding responsibilities when participating.

20.4 The café should not be used to discuss identifiable individual cases or to seek a group opinion about the diagnosis, treatment, education or safeguarding of a particular child.

20.5 Where a participant has concerns about a child's safety or welfare, appropriate professional or safeguarding advice should be sought.

20.6 Where there is an immediate risk of harm, participants should contact the appropriate emergency or safeguarding service rather than relying upon the café.

21. Entire Agreement and Severability

21.1 These Terms constitute the agreement between IAN and the participant concerning participation in IAN Community Cafés, together with any specific booking terms displayed for the relevant event.

21.2 If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue to apply.

22. Changes to These Terms

22.1 IAN may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes to its Community Cafés, legal requirements or organisational practices.

22.2 The version applicable to a booking will be the version made available when the booking is made, subject to any changes required by law.

23. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

23.1 These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

23.2 Nothing in these Terms affects any mandatory rights a participant may have concerning the jurisdiction in which a dispute may be brought.
