Attachment and parenting children is a beautiful exploration of relationship. In this seminar parenting expert Rebecca Sheikh examines ‘attachment style’ parenting. She opens up an exploration of the different types of discipline and why the old paradigm of rewards and punishments is more disposed to rendering insecure attachments. In describing the 9 forms of Attachment Play as outlined in Dr Aletha Solter’s book ‘Attachment Play: how to solve children’s behaviour problems with play. laughter and connection’, she reveals how understanding the language of play can profoundly heal stress and trauma and create secure attachments with our children. She invites the group to reflect on the importance of empathetic limits and the importance of children experiencing the frustration and futility of these boundaries to feel secure. She concludes by touching on the healing impact of crying, raging and laughter in the context of a loving parent-child relationship.
About the Speaker
Rebecca Sheikh is a certified Level 2 Aware Parenting teacher, and her passion lies in helping parents find ways to discipline without the use of punishments or rewards and strengthening attachment in families through a deeper understanding of crying, raging and laughter in children. She taught as a primary school teacher for 17 years before having her first child. She is now the mother of two children (ages 8 and 5). Rebecca completed an MA in Counselling in Education at The Tavistock Institute in London. She is currently training to be a Jungian Sandplay therapist and play therapist. Rebecca leads staff meetings in schools to help teachers look at alternatives to punishments and rewards, leads Attachment Play workshops and offers consultations to support parents with the Aware Parenting approach. Rebecca is involved in setting up gentle parent and child groups. She has recently started working part time as Pastoral Manager at a progressive school in London. Rebecca also works on the executive council of The International Attachment Network.
